On
16 June 2004, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie will launch
World Refugee Day celebrations accompanied by the US Secretary of
State Colin Powell (schedule permitting) and a resettled refugee living in the United
States. At that time, this esteemed launch delegation will also
award the winners of the Fourth Annual World Refugee Day Poster
Contest. The event will be held at the National Geographic Museum
at Explorers Hall, and will be followed by a press conference.

Since
she was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Jolie has worked tirelessly
towards building advocacy and support for refugees and their assistance
and protection. In 2001, she traveled to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cote
D’Ivoire, Cambodia, and Pakistan in order to visit refugees
in the field. Since then, she has traveled to Namibia, Thailand, Ecuador,
Kosovo, Chechnya, Jordan and Sri Lanka. Speaking from her personal
experience, Ms. Jolie will reach out to the press, the diplomatic
community and our nation’s lawmakers to raise awareness about
and support for refugees. |
