UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie

On 16 June 2004, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie will launch World Refugee Day celebrations accompanied by the US Secretary of State Colin Powell (schedule permitting) and a resettled refugee living in the United States. At that time, this esteemed launch delegation will also award the winners of the Fourth Annual World Refugee Day Poster Contest. The event will be held at the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall, and will be followed by a press conference.

Since she was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Jolie has worked tirelessly towards building advocacy and support for refugees and their assistance and protection. In 2001, she traveled to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cote D’Ivoire, Cambodia, and Pakistan in order to visit refugees in the field. Since then, she has traveled to Namibia, Thailand, Ecuador, Kosovo, Chechnya, Jordan and Sri Lanka. Speaking from her personal experience, Ms. Jolie will reach out to the press, the diplomatic community and our nation’s lawmakers to raise awareness about and support for refugees.
